Yesterday followed family praying at Muar, purposely stopped by "otak-otak" stall to buy "otak-otak". Muar otak-otak is extremely oishii and famous, we bought 40 pcs.
"Otak" means 'brain' in malay, wonder why it is named as otak-otak. Is that because we will become smarter after eat more otak-otak?
Otak-otak is made by mixing fish paste (usually mackerel) with a mixture of spices including chillies, garlic, shallots, turmeric, lemon grass and coconut milk. The mixture is then wrapped in a banana leaf that has been softened by steaming, then grilled or steamed. It is very yummy and creamy. It feels like eating "Cawanmushi' the Japanese egg dish or custard, but bit more creamy. It can be eaten as a snack or with bread or rice as part of a meal.
